ALEXA MEADESEEING DIMENSIONS

Since her global breakthrough in 2010, Alexa Meade has been one of the shooting stars of the American art scene, with exhibitions and performances in all international art metropolises. Her special technique of using acrylic paint to transform her models into flat, two-dimensional images of themselves, and thus to create a painterly interpretation of them on their own surface, has inspired and fascinated people all over the world. In her sixth solo exhibition curated by the Gallery for Contemporary Photography, Munich, 19 highlights from the Munich exhibitions from 2014, 2016 and 2018 are shown, plus four new works from the years 2017 to 2019.

14 May 2020 – 18 July 2020

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, it is not possible to hold a vernissage. Likewise, due to the current travel restrictions, the artist cannot take part in the exhibition personally. We kindly ask our valued customers and friends to visit the exhibition with a face mask during normal opening hours, best spread over the week. Four visitors are allowed to be in the gallery at the same time. All door handles in the gallery are regularly disinfected.

The following works are presented in the show:

ALEXA MEADESEEING DIMENSIONS

Towards the end of her studies in political science in 2009 Alexa Meade (* 1986, Washington, D.C.) was bodypainting a friend with acrylic paint when she took a photo of him using her cell phone. On noticing that the image looked like a flat painting she initially thought the display was faulty. But she soon realized that she had discovered something new and exciting, namely the illusion of making three-dimensional people and objects appear two-dimensional through her painting, captured in the photographic image.
But she was also aware that this type of presentation, which can at best be defined as illusionistic body painting, challenges viewing habits and leaves the viewer perplexed — unless they are prepared to further investigate this particular painting technique. In this respect, Alexa Meade’s art embodies her own aspiration not to be satisfied with the first impression, but to sharpen the senses and to subject the mechanisms of one’s own perception, as well as the truth of the images, to continuous scrutiny.

Her unique approach has gained her worldwide acclaim with exhibitions in renowned venues, including the Grand Palais des Champs-Élysées in Paris, Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the United Nations Building in New York City.
