JazzBallade – a photographic narrative

by Vinzenz Löffler and Sebastian Flecker

A “photographic narrative” that accompanies a jazz musician in his everyday life together with his thoughts and longings — Vinzenz Löffler has been floating this idea for many years and finally realized it together with the Munich author Sebastian Flecker, who plays the figure of jazz pianist Blum in his texts brought to life. For the exhibition, a selection of 15 black-and-white images from the publication “JazzBallade” was made, supplemented by three colored concert impressions.

JazzBallade – a photographic narrative

“The photographer has to take life by surprise when he gets out of bed. Photography by no means stops life, but surprises it in its moments of highest density or rather ease, because it‘s not about capturing meaning-saturated scenes, overloaded with messages. Life touches and passes by. To catch it, the photographer has to submit to this law.…” (Henri Cartier-Bresson)
This thought is also the photographs of Vinzenz Löffler committed. The “Sketchbook” to be viewed on the artist’s homepage provides an insight into his work and the photos of “JazzBallade”, which will be presented in the gallery for Contemporary Photography for one week from 5 November 2019. A “photographic narrative” that accompanies a jazz musician in his everyday life, including his thoughts and longings – Vinzenz Löffler had been thinking of this idea for many years and finally realized it together with the Munich author Sebastian Flecker, who brought the figure of jazz pianist Blum in his texts to life.
In impressions and highlights, photographer and author immerse themselves in Blum’s musical and melancholic world. Blum imagines himself happy in his modest musical life, but increasingly falls for his past love. Sebastian Flecker’s cautious texts fill moods with life. Delicately, he feels loneliness and heartache, in conjunction with Vincent Löffler’s photographs he experiences quiet happiness and deceleration. Eight colored concert impressions complete around fifty black-and-white photographs and thus stand for the splashes of color – not only in the photo book, but also in Blum’s everyday life. Can a good life be a failure?

Vinzenz Löffler, born 1968 in Hanover, lives and works in Munich. He has been involved with photography and literature since his youth. A solo exhibition in the “Faust” in Hanover.
Sebastian Flecker is a native of Munich. His great passions are music and literature – both combine regularly in his stories. Always on the lookout for new linguistic compositions and exciting topics, he likes to experiment in different genres. JazzBallade is his first release. In 2014, he co-founded the author collective “AgAti”, whose first joint short story volume “Lost in Everyday Life” will be published in fall 2019.
